TELL MY STORY SO FAR
The aim of the the organisation is to help people sleep better. Using local community spaces and GP Surgeries to provide a safe place to share experiences with poor sleep and find ways to improve habits around sleep and optimise an improved quality of sleep.Ā
At the start of 2023 I saw a flyer in a local cafe in Streatham asking people in the community to help people in the community with projects to support people with health and well being. I have taught yoga for 30 years and during the pandemic and locks downs I did some CPD training in sleep therapy. I thought I am probably not the only person struggling with sleep at this current time and this course will give me the tools to help my students.
I have a lot of experience teaching in community spaces and when I saw the flyer I felt that this is something that I can do for my community.Ā
I truly believe that a community can thrive when it comes together, however small these groups might be. Through shared experience we can help each other and although the classes are sleep focused by simply sharing experiences of poor sleep participants are reasured that they are not on their own with their worries.
A lot of us are wide awake at 2am.
I have now received two grants from Streatham Action and have been been running regular classes in the community over the past 12 months.Ā
I have been encouraged to create The Sleep Better Community CIC in order to continue with this work and bring these classes to other communities.Ā
"WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT THE CLASS This is a mix of feed back from our group sessions at Gracefield gds. * I found the sleep course really relaxing. Itās so lovely to have an opportunity to rest and relax. Fingers crossed it helps the sleep! Please put my name down for next Monday. * I thought it was a valuable session. Something I took from the session was being mindful. That itās okay to observe and notice noises around us such as the clock ticking, people arguing etc but to let it pass and not emotionally engage with it. This was useful to me. Looking forward to next weekās session. * So many positive emotions, I use mindfulness techniques every day, especially when I go to the park, I sit on a bench and listen to 20-minute sessions on YouTube, then I close my eyes, listen and follow what the therapist says. I'm very glad that I could experience it today in a larger group and not alone, which was amazing for me. * A safe space was created to achieve deep relaxation. Curiosity, excitement, and peace was felt. I particularly enjoyed the visualisation aspect of it and the detailed body scan.āØ * Thank you for the invite to the session today. It really was informative and I have felt a sense of calm and relaxation since leaving today. Unfortunately I am still working until 9pm and struggling to stay awake šbut at least it proves what I learned today was effective āØ * thank you for organising the course which I'm sure will be helpful to me. I want to continue attending. Iāve suffered from poor sleep for a number of years, and have recently gone through a really debilitating patch of insomnia, which has lasted for 6 weeks. This has had a terrible impact on my day-to-day life, making work, looking after my children and carrying out daily tasks really difficult. "
