Embrace the art of doing nothing. Become focused on the Radical Power of Stillness.

You have probably heard the term FOMO (fear of missing out) but I have recently become aware of the term JOMO (the joy of missing out). I really didn’t know this was a thing, I thought it was just me who said things like, its what I don’t do that I like the most. I have another version of this that I use after a day mooching around the shops, (which isn’t something that I do very often either) It is what i don’t but that i like the most.
Now don’t go thinking that I am not doing very much or enjoy myself, far from it, I am enjoying myself a lot. In recent months I gave myself some time to consciously think about what makes me happy and called this tracking joy.
I recently described the outcome of this with my mindfulness group and said that I now have these little drops of joy that feel like sugar cubes that i can add to my cup of sweetness, making life feel like honey.
My yoga students will be very familiar with one of my favourite quotes from Swami Satchananda here in the Hatha Yoga Pradipka, Energy is like honey and where there is honey, honey bees come. He goes on to say that the opposite of this is that energy can feel like stale pizza.
None of us want that do we?
It's difficult to update you with inspired nothingness, But I think that I have worked out a way to communicate how I have done this with a bit of time management jargon.
If you are looking for an easy time then here are some options for you to try.
- Audit the Schedule: Highlight how to identify "empty" time and protect it from being filled with errands or digital chores.
- Digital Detox Blocks: Recommend scheduling 1-2 hours on the weekend as "device-free" time where productivity is strictly forbidden.
- Normalize Boredom: Lean into moments of waiting (like in a queue or on a commute) without reaching for their smartphones, allow your mind to wander.
For those of you who don’t need or want time management then simply ask yourself if you are enjoying what you are doing. Its a simple mindfulness exercise in being present. It's ok to not be happy in the moment, it's the exercise in awareness or knowing. It is a practice and will take time. It could be that you need cull, a big space cleaning or mental tidying up, perhaps even a physical one. The latter often been the easier one that is also going to make you feel better, but is all a very good start.
I have tweaked around the edges of my life and made a few changes to how I live. There is effort to making things happen and change does take time but if you can try one small thing that makes you happier in life then thats good enough.
I hope that this has offered you some insights and inspiration to help you move towards living with ease.
I do have a few more tips.
My audios to help you sleep are useful and not just for sleeping better. There is a deep relaxation audio but there are two short audios on being present and breathing and a body scan. Both of which you can do whilst standing in a queue or sitting on the bus.
You might be asking yourself “I thought this was all about the power of nothing”?
The Buddha is always laughing.
